Personal Statement
I am a professor of English (Comparative drama), teaching and researching in the Department of English, University of Lagos, Nigeria. I am particularly interested in locating, isolating and identifying the commonalities in Nigerian drama and British drama, (with a special focus on the works of John Osborne and Femi Osofisan.) These are two different countries with a history of colonialism. Interestingly, the dramatic output of the two countries has indicated that the human condition is the same everywhere. I have explored works in the area of intertextuality in African literature and the utilisation of oral elements in written drama. My research has shown that African writers have a penchant for re-writing, reconstructing, adapting and holding dialogues with older writers in and outside the continent. I have made significant contributions to women’s drama research in Nigeria as well as Nollywood and migration studies. I have added to the burgeoning number of Nigerian writings through my plays and poems. My ultimate goal is to translate my academic research/creative contents as instruments that will humanise, transform and impact the society.
