Personal Statement
I am a professor of Literary and Cultural Studies, specialising in African Postcolonial Literature, Popular and Visual Cultures. In Literary Studies, my work spotlights underexplored or overlooked writers, based on a personal research conviction that any writer or artist with an ‘appreciable’ number of works to their credit deserves to be heard for what they are doing or not doing. The outcome so far has been two volumes of essays on two Nigerian writers and a third on a Nigerian visual artist. My current research is focused on the Lagos creative and cultural economy. I work with artists, writers and entrepreneurs to understand and map their involvements in the current reconfiguring of arts, performances and literature to serve the diverse interests and needs of expanding entertainment audiences in this city of twenty-two million inhabitants.
