About the Department Of Religious Studies
The Department of Religious Studies provides functional training in religious traditions reflecting, as much as possible, the balance between knowledge and practice. Considering the need for an extensive study of religion beyond its limited utilities in the school system, the Senate of the University of Lagos in 2016 approved the establishment of the Department of Religious Studies in the Faculty of Arts. The following two academic programmes were also approved to be run under the new department:
Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) Degree in Christian Studies
Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) Degree in Islamic Studies
The first batch of students for the two programmes came on board in the 2018/2019 academic session. Historically, Religious Studies at the University of Lagos, evolved out of the Religious Studies Education programmes of the defunct Department of Curriculum Studies and later on the Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education. We look beyond producing work force for the lower levels of the education system. We offer the public the breadth and depth of religious studies with diverse opportunities for specialization and programme offerings capable of addressing diverse needs of individuals who intend to study religion for various purposes.Since there is a religious dimension to every human endeavour, the Department shall serve as a platform for interdisciplinary interaction. We are committed to preparing students for employment in the public and private sectors where integrity and uprightness are greatly valued.
